Guest: Reggie Wright - Vocalist
Reggie Wright was born to parents Reginald Sr. and Janise Wright on 10/10/1973; the middle son of 3 boys. Raised in a Christian Pentecostal (COGIC) upbringing, Reggie was reared with definitive structure and discipline the likes of which surely outline his adulthood as well. “We were raised around great gospel music (The Hawkins Family, Andre Crouch, The Clark Sisters, Vanessa Bell Armstrong, The Winans and many more). He says, “I really took an interest in music at about age 11 and knew that I wanted to pursue singing specifically. There is nothing more satisfying, to me, than a great vocalist or musician that truly lives within their gift. Platforms differ widely amongst both groups (singers and musicians) and I’m still trying to find mine.
As I matured into my 20’s and 30’s I branched out and acclimated to both the jazz and R&B fields respectively. The biggest influence for me in the jazz field was undoubtedly Sarah Vaughan. She epitomized everything I wanted to be in an entertainer. Not only was she a world-renowned vocalist but a great pianist as well. Luther Vandross and vintage Aretha Franklin were my refuge with R&B. There are others that stand out for sure, but these are by far my favorites!
My style of vocal singing and delivery are best attributed to ballads and classic jazz songs from the 40’s through the 60’s in my opinion. I’m no longer in a hurry to just get out there and make a record like I was when I was younger. I believe a good project is like preparing a good meal and all the ingredients are succinct in making it a 3 dimensional experience. I’m currently working on that aspect of the creative process currently.
While singing is my chief passion, massage therapy is a close 2nd. This is my day-to-day livelihood at the moment and I’m looking forward to having the 2 exchange places. My last project was a self produced live CD/DVD recording in Oakland California in 2011. I most recently moved to New Orleans to marinate in the culture and experience the birthplace of Jazz.”
