Jamie began writing poetry in school, when her instructor, Cynthia Hendricks, challenged her class to enter the school's poetry contest. Her submission, "Grace", did not win or even place in the top three, but she discovered her passion and continued to write. Her poem, "Sista Girl" won the poetry contest the following year. She went on to win slam contests at school and performed the Russell in downtown Hartford, CT
