Guest: Dorean Edwards - Inspirational author, and music entertainment consultant
Inspirational author, and music entertainment consultant, Dorean Edwards releases highly sought-after autobiography, “Trapped in a Little Girl’s Body” .
Edwards was raised in an abusive household in St. Louis, MO. She has pushed through abuse, pain, tears and hardships to become a survivor who inspires others. Her autobiography, “Trapped in a Little Girl’s Body,” tells her story of abuse endured at the hands of her stepfather from ages 7 to 17 while her mother sat in denial. She said the book reveals how she was raped, beaten and discarded. She overcame it all through faith, perseverance and forgiveness.
Edwards found great strength in forgiveness. Faith and forgiveness led her to Chicago and then to Los Angeles where she has crafted a successful life and career of giving back to others through gospel music entertainment. She said, “I was raised in church, so I wanted to do something in gospel. My dad was a gospel singer. And I always wanted to inspire people in the gospel arena because of my growing up with low self-esteem.”
Her love of children and desire to instill self confidence in youth led Edwards to create “Stop the Violence, Think Education, Put God First” sixteen years ago. This annual youth conference features workshops, panel discussions. Children also receive free school supplies. It has featured celebrities such as Nick Cannon, Flex Alexander and Shanice Wilson, Christ Tucker, Hill Harper Tia and Tamera Mowry, Kirk Whalum, Deitrick Haddon, Meagan Good, Mali Music, Willie Moore, Jr. and Angie Stone. “I am grateful that this conference has inspired youth to go to college, and for some, to return to high school. I started this event because I just wanted to see young people be happy and educated,” said Edwards.
Edwards’ company, Consultant Entertainment has a client list that reads like a who’s who among gospel and inspirational stars. The list includes Kirk Franklin, Donnie McClurkin, Stevie Wonder, The Winans, Ce Ce Winans, Gerald Alston of The Manhattans, Bishop Noel Jones, The Mighty Clouds of Joy and Smoky Robinson. Her work with television shows and events includes The Stellar Awards, The Arsenio Hall Show, Quaker Oats Talent Competition, Badami Productions (Gospel Music Presents) and Bobby Jones Gospel (BET). Additionally, she served as a committee chair for the distinguished Stellar Awards.
Edwards has been celebrated because of her tireless work to encourage others through gospel music. The Urban Network Marketing-Entertainment Summit presented her an award for her work in gospel entertainment. Most recently, she received the 2015 Impact Award for her work with young people in the Los Angeles area through her youth conference. The Impact Awards honors individuals who are making a difference in their community.
While the accolades are fine, Edwards said, “I’m happy to be alive after wanting to commit suicide, having survived a heart attack, rape and being beaten. I have learned to be humble at all times. And I make God first in my life at all times.”
Commenting on the book, Dorean says, I thought long and hard before committing to write my book. My goal is to encourage others and to inspire people through my testimony to their highest potential.”
